Back in the old country (not geographically–two decades ago in the 90′s), there was one brand of mobile phone, there were two brands of jeans, vaccines were definitely good for you, and you could do advertising or you could do marketing. Life was simple.

If you were going to do some advertising for you business, you’d consider magazines, tv, newspapers, or the yellow pages. On the outside chance you were big enough, you’d sprinkle in there some billboard ads.

If you were going to do some marketing, you hire a PR person to get you writeups in those same magazines and papers you are considering advertising in. You’d go to some entrepreneurs’ round table, you’d go to trade shows, and you’d mingle. This was marketing.

Today, prospective clients ask my team for marketing help. And frankly, I’m not really sure what that means.

If you ask us for marketing help and then tell us that you want to market via Twitter and Facebook, which are social environments but then tell us that you have nobody on staff who can write and be a full time web customer service rep, that’s like saying, I want to go to a big industry trade show for networking and I have nobody to send (yes, can can hire out but it’s much more cost effective to do it inhouse).

So here are the pros and cons; strengths and weaknesses of each medium of communication and each of their requirements for successful implementation. Special thanks to Orange County’s Top Solar Panel Installer for inspiring this post!

The Pros and Cons: Google SEO vs Google Adsense vs Twitter vs Facebook vs Blogging vs Forums vs Banner Ads

Google Adsense
Pros: Instant Traffic, Precise Measurement

Cons: $1-$5 per click, conservatively 800 clicks per sale (Do the math)

Requirements: Just sign up with a credit card

Google Organic Search
Pros: High credibility and conversion rates (lower every year due to SEO spammers); generally 1200% higher conversion rates than Adwords Sponsored Results; long term residual traffic

Cons: None, if you’re already a leading reference site for your niche. If not, Cons: significant labor and strategy required to secure page one position; if done incorrectly, you could end up being sand-boxed or blacklisted

Requirements: A good honest writer; Finding and paying for a very experienced Google Strategy Team (avoid SEO people. many tend to be Sleezy. See SEO is a SCAM); picking keyword terms that people will actually click (trickier than you imagine See #2: Nine Dark Google SEO Trade Secrets)

Twitter
Pros: Immediate direct access to millions of users internationally; Bio search to precisely target location and demographic; Direct two way communication; Unlimited messaging; Strong mobile penetration; Direct penetration to SMS text for many users; Real Time Search: Eaves dropping on live conversations by key word (How useful would it be to know what people are saying about you, your competitor, your products, theirs, etc in real time?); High impression to CRT ratio

Cons: Direct two way communications; People can arbitrarily report you as spam; You can only message a practical maximum of 5 people per message; ZERO Google Page Rank Value (links don’t help your Google rank–practically SEE LINK); Easy to acquire hundreds of demographically precise followers daily (labor intensive)

Requirements: Highly senior customer service person; Skilled terse writer; 10 minute response time; Availability 12 hours a day for non international companies; Consulting from an experienced Twitter culture consultant or every book ever written about Twitter; A Tweet lasts about 60 minutes before it disappears downstream; Impression rate is very low at about 4% of total follower base. More: http://journik.posterous.com/tag/twitter

Facebook (Organic)
Pros: Impression rate is high at about 70% of friend base; Instant response is generally less necessary than Twitter; Low maintenance;

Cons: High resistance to acquiring new friends and “Likes”; More challenging than Twitter to precisely target by demographics

Requirements: None if you’re happy with low volume reach. If not, you’ll need an experienced marketing team to build your Facebook friend count (See: Facebook Marketing Trade Secrets)

Facebook (Ads)
Pros: Near instant release and traffic; Absolutely the most precise demographic targeting system on the web; Pay per click; Generally less expensive than Google Adwords

Cons: Low click through rates compared to Google Adwords and much lower than Organic Google. Generally even lower CTR than Twitter; Second most costly PPC medium next to Google Adwords

Requirements: Experienced marketeer to pinpoint target demographics or web savvy business owner; Understanding of value of a “Like” vs direct click through to destination site; credit card

Advertising on Discussion Forums and Blogs

Banner Ads PPC (Pay Per Click)
Pros: You can precisely target which readership you want by making a direct deal with a blog or forum owner; Relatively inexpensive per impression; You can create deep branding impact and messaging inexpensively if you pay per click and design the banners to prevent click throughs (Why you would do it is the subject of another post)

Cons: Low conversion rate; Moderate cost

Requirements: A very senior and experienced direct response copy writer; very experienced designer; blog and forum stats/media kit; Relationship with Blog and Forum Owner

Banner Ads PPI (Pay Per Impression)
Pros: If you design a banner with a touchdown call to action, you can double or triple your click thrus while paying a flat rate per impression. Each click through is calculated to cost you about a dollar and occur at about every 700 impressions. So if you design your ad correctly, you can get a click every 200 impressions and still be paying the same amount. This math also applies to Facebook Ads.

Cons: No matter how high your CRT (Click Through Rate) is, your conversion to sale will be low. After all, this is still just a cold ad with no rapport of credibility.

Requirements:
A very senior and experienced direct response copy writer; very experienced designer; blog and forum stats/media kit; Relationship with Blog and Forum Owner

Youtube Marketing
Youtube always get preferential Google positioning. This is because Google owns Youtube. This is also because Google wants to start selling Google TVs. So if you have a Youtube video with exactly the same content as a blog post, your Youtube video will be on Broadway while your blog post is off-off-off-Broadway.

But Youtube and is a huge topic. So we’ve focused and expanded on it exclusively here: Youtube Forcast and Trend Watch: How to Double Your Sales With Youtube

Build Your Own Blog and Discussion Forum Empire

Building Your Own Discussion Forum
Pros: You don’t have to pay a forum owner to advertise on his website; You have full control over conversational direction; You wield adminstrator / moderator influence

Cons: You’ve got to build the forum

Requirements: Forum builder; Forum moderator; Forum admin; Marketing to drive traffic to forum

Building Your Own Blog
Pros: You don’t have to pay any other bloggers to advertise on their blog; You have full control of content (See http://journik.posterous.com/tag/blogging )

Cons: You’ve got to blog twice daily;

Requirements: A+ Level Blogger; Designer

So now that you’re totally confused, let’s take you back to the old country. Back then, there was advertising, marketing and sales. That was it and everyone knew what was what. Now, not so much.

So to give you an industry veteran perspective of all your choices today, just think of Advertising as a shotgun blast. If you shoot often enough, you’ll hit somebody when they’re in the market to buy. But advertising doesn’t do a good job of building rapport and credibility. There’s no good-will associated with advertising.

People buy on rapport (relationship depth) and credibility (demonstrated expertise). That’s why people buy from friends and celebrities.

So here’s where marketing comes in. Marketing is designed to bring you to your market in an intimate way. Marketing builds relationships. Your marketing is what generates referral business. I don’t know the last time anybody email forwarded a buddy an ad. Finally, Marketing is what gets that phone to ring on your salesman’s desk.

So by this historic definition, Google Search Engine Marketing isn’t marketing at all. It’s just advertising. All it does is make you available should a prospect be looking for what you sell. Marketing develops relationships. And this difference is critical when you’re goal is to develop the least expensive immediate lowest hanging fruit sales and create long term relationships that deliver long term recurring business. One pays your bills. The other builds your empire.

Have you ever wondered why your blog, ecommerce website, or web app doesn’t show up in Google for anything remotely searchable? Basically, there are only two factors that count in getting you to page one of a Google search.

1. Number of links

2. Words used in those links.

So you think, “well, if I just get a ton of links and DIGGs from DIGG.com, I’ll be flying up the ranks in Google!”

Nope. Doesn’t work that way. There’s a caveat. DIGG.com links are all NOFOLLOW. So are Youtube links. Google Groups too. So any links from these sites are totally useless. I really hope you’re not paying a SEO guy money to do diddly squat. How do you spell “did-ly?”

Image via two sites I highly recommend following religiously if you are even remotely involved in web business or like cilantro: http://www.copyblogger.com/seo-copywriting-matter/ and http://www.seomoz.org/blog/perfecting-keyword-targeting-on-page-optimization

Here’s why:

1. The wedges, “Anchor text” and “Link popularity” are exactly the same thingGoogle bases PageRank based on external links (base! (one more thrown in for good measure)).

2. This is a SEO (search engine optimizers’) poll — NOT based on a Google engineer’s leaked data
Let this be very clear. This chart is built on the OPINIONS of SEO Expert Ninjas

3. Matt Cutts is reaching for a muscle relaxant due stomach cramping from laughing so hard at #2 (above)

4. Wedge “Traffic + CTR data” are exactly the same thing — WRONG.
Google measures repeat CTR from THEIR pages not YOUR server traffic. Google doesn’t care how much traffic you get. It bears ZERO weight on relevancy of your page to search query. Think logically. If your stomach Googled “hamburger,” would you rather get a McDonald’s or an In-N-Out? McD’s gets far more traffic in their drive thrus but the QUALITY of the result is what matters to Google.

5. Meta Tags!
I know, the graphic does not cite meta-tags and it shouldn’t. Because, to the credit of the graphic and those surveyed, meta tags went out with the Macarena. BUT you and I both know that these SEO Expert Ninja Samurais still use meta keyword tags. So not citing them as a 50% factor is totally disingenuous.

#6 BONUS: They left out the most import part…
Among Google’s BIGGEST ranking factors is whether or not the content is on a page that is within a property OWNED by GOOGLE. It’s true. Google would rather you visit a Youtube, Knol, or Blogspot web result. It’s further true that they’d rather you visited a Google result that has a Google adwords ad on it. I mean, come on, wouldn’t you?

BUT only in the early days when there were only 30,000 total websites on earth!

Google has more computer science PhDs than Stanford and MIT Universities FROM STANFORD AND MIT AND CAL AND HARVARD. They are smarter than your hired “SEO or SOCIAL MEDIA EXPERT.”

So to get through this gate, you have to be smarter than the gatekeeper.

Being smarter than Google PhDs is not as hard as you’d think. For one, Google uses an algorithm. This is a one-size-fits-all formulaic strategy to keep only deserving sites in page one status. What this method leaves are narrow but totally useful and wholesome windows of opportunity.

This is how you climb through a window.

1. Google Favors Their Own Web Properties in Any Search.
Opportunity: If you want to curry Google’s favor, focus on promoting a url hosted on Google’s servers. WordPress, Posterous, and Tumblr aren’t them.

2. Youtube is Still Projectile Bleeding Green Benjamins.
Opportunity: Have you noticed that recently, no matter what you search for, there’s always some Youtube video associated with it at the bottom of the page? Google has to drive traffic to Youtube to make that $1.65 billion investment pay back. Help Google help You. The most slickly greased upwardly mobile google stable urls start with “youtube.com/watch?v=” So if you’re going to spearhead any url for Google love, do a Youtube url. From there, a big smile can redirect all viewers to any other website you desire.

3. Your Competitors are Stupid
Opportunity: (AS AN EXAMPLE – APPLIES TO EVERY SEARCH CAMPAIGN) Adriel Hampton just hit me on a thought about getting to Google’s page 1 under Gov 2.0. He is right on the money. In the Google backend screen grab (I tried to avoid stringing those two words into one sentance) below, you notice something peculiar. “Gov 2″ has 300% more search demand around the world but Marketing and SEO EXPERTS are all competing for the term “government 2.0.” In fact, 300% more people are fighting for that 1/3 size pie. This means that if you focused on getting to page one under the term “government 2.0,” your uphill battle would be 900% tougher (partially because even if you got to the top of the mountain, you’d only get 33% of the traffic you’d get from the “gov 2″ mountian).

4. The Top Dogs Are Fangier Than You Think.
Opportunity: None.

If based on #3, you thought you found a golden path into Googirvana, although you’re right, it’s of no value because those pearly gates are guarded by fanged St. Peters: 1) O’Reilly Media 2) Wikipedia 3) The REAL United States Government 4) Techcrunch 5) Microsoft etc…

UNLESS you think smarter than Google’s Phd’s and the fanged St. Peters.

5. You Have a Devout Passionate Niche Base.
Opportunity: 100% Guaranteed to be on page one of Google. I know this from personal experience. It took me 8 months to topple Wikipedia, Sprint, and Verizonwireless to get to page one number one under the term “wireless internet.” This is how I did it.

A. Estabilish base strongholds. Before you compete against 177,000,000 websites,

completely dominate your foundation basecamps that are at much lower altitudes.

But make sure that the base strongholds are build on the epicenters of passionate evangelists like the above search for “gov 2.0 tweetups.” Notice that you only have 66.100 competing websites for the top spot?

If you’re not buzzing with excitement right now, you’re missing the whole point. Dominating a base camp is not the point. It’s what your basecamp can do that is game changingly exciting. If you become the Prime Minister of all Gov 2.0 Tweetups, you’ll be able to provide a value proposition, an offer they can’t refuse, so that every single passionate Gov 2.0 evangelist will link back to your blog. You will rapidly defang Sts. Peter, Paul, and Mary.

Now, our work is cut out for us.

Adriel, how many unique websites and bloggers can you curry to link to one Youtube video? This will give us an inventory of our firepower. Here’s the first shot: Gov 2.0

UPDATE: Phase One Complete. Adriel in Page One of Google under “Gov 2.0 Meetup” Via this video listing entitled “Gov 2.0 Conferences Meetups…”

NEXT: SEO is a S.C.A.M.

It’s not what you think it is. Google has a 0-10 rating scale that basically assigns your site a “credibility value.” Get used to seeing this by downloading the Google ToolBar.

In order for your outbound links to be worth anything, you’ve got to have a high Google page rank. Links are crucial for getting your website on page one of Google. Links from a high page rank site are far more valuable at leap frogging over your search competitors than links from low page rank sites.

So how do you build a high page rank site?

1. Make lots of unique pages.
2. Make all the pages relate in topic.
3. Make others link to you.

How? Simple.

A. Refuse to answer email. Force everyone to use your forum. They build your content for you and you save time by not repeating yourself.
