What’s the revenue difference between your best sales rep and your worst? If it was tiny we wouldn’t be having this conversation. There’s probably about a 50% spread. How much revenue does that represent to you?

Professionals already have a checkbox list of everything you could possibly want. The whole time it takes you to reinvent the wheel, a pro could already have you on the ground driving new revenue.

5) A Professional Writer Knows How to Close the Deal
Like your best sales rep, a professional PR writer knows how to close the deal. Go ahead, read your own corporate collateral. Read your website. Specifically look for the call to action at the end of every page. It’s not there is it? How many subscribers, callers, contact form inquiries, and buyers are you loosing right now because you don’t have a persuasive and compelling call to action. A pro wouldn’t have left it out.

And if that professional writer you’re talking with has a Public Relations background, you’re in the best possible hands. PR people are indoctrinated in a culture of measuring their impact. Even if they are closet poets, when it comes to corporate communications, they write to drive results.

If you’ve ever released a new product or service you know how quickly the blog world can just light up with mention, photo, quote, and hearsay about your product. Whether the review is good or bad it’s always good. The more bloggers write about you new products and services, the higher Google will vault you in your category.

When new clients in the fashion industry ask us to build their site and help them market their new lines, often, they ask us about editorial write ups in Paper, Flaunt, Hearty, etc. They ask us if we know any of the writers and editors in big yet obscure hipster magazines.

Our answer generally sounds like, “Sure. But why?”

Then we ask them if they have an estimate of how many corporate buyers might call their offices in the LA Mart as a result of being featured in a magazine. If they’re not sure, we tell them–zero.

The expectation many new clients have is that getting into a prime-time publication will get them into retail stores and online sales. It doesn’t. We’ve been in everything from hipster publications to the WSJ and NYTimes. They just don’t generate sales.

It’s a long way from the printed page to the “H-Double-T-P.”

This is not to say you shouldn’t try to get traditional print or TV media coverage. We advocate it. And we even have PR partners who will make sure you get that press. See: TOP PR FIRMS NYC and LA and TOP PR FIRMS LA and SF … But we advise that you do so for the right reasons. Press will generally not work as a sales generator. Press works best as marketing collateral.

If You had to choose between taking a syndicated news anchor to a $200 lunch vs a non-celebrity blogger, who would you choose?

Even brilliant people with a Harvard or Wharton MBA get these two issues blurred up all the time. Marketing collateral is not designed to get you sales. It’s designed to get you in the door. Once you’re past the door, it’s “sales generators” that are designed to get you into the wallet.

You need both. A well known publication will get you the credibility to get that sales meeting set up. But it’s probably not going to get a buyer from Nordstrom’s to call you. To do that, you’ll need sales generators.

We’ve compiled a Top 100 list of “sales generators” for our fashion industry clients. These are the top niche fashion bloggers globally. They have influence beyond well known magazines for the following reasons:

1. Writers from well known print publications do not have an open dialogue with their readers.

2. Writers from well known print publications do not build a rapport with their readers.

3. Writers from well known print publications do not have personal influence over their readers. They don’t let their readers into their personal Facebook account. They don’t let their readers see their personal photos on Facebook. And they certainly don’t do any drunk sexting with their readership on some random post Taco Tuesday 2am flurry.

If you had the choice to take either a prime-time NBC newscaster, an LA Times reporter, or a blogger to lunch at the Ivy on Robertson in Beverly Hills, who would you pick? This is not a trick question. If you took the newscaster out (pick any: Lisa Hernandez ABC7, Jessica Holmes KTLA5, Leslie Miller – ABC7, Lisa Siegel KCAL9. Kim Baldonado – NBC4) you’d have a big media van with requisite ET phone home dish on the roof and strobe lights accompany you.

Network Newscasters don’t have a cult following (update: ummm, we might be wrong)

If you took the LA Times reporter out, you’d only have one photog with you but the guy would look really smart. And all the people at Ivy would think you were smart by association. If you took a blogger out to lunch, none of the above would happen. Nobody would notice. Well, nobody but the following:

Top Ten Reasons to Take a Blogger to Lunch as Opposed to Some Hot Newscaster:
10. Network news will give you 15 seconds.

9. Network news broadcasts to everybody (not a good thing).

How to Pick The Right Media to Communicate with Your Market

I started out describing the pros and cons of each medium of communication. Being featured on the news at 7pm is exciting and spectacular but it’s a long way from the TV to the buy now button on your website. Being on page one of Google for what you do is a major strategic win but there’s no viral ripple effect that gets you forwarded and forwarded. Twitter has the strongest viral ripple effect potential but 87% of your followers stopped using Twitter. Facebook has the highest credibility because someone you personally know is advocating a product, service, or company but the average age of a facebook user is 23 years old and they only have about 320 friends.  Buying an ad spot on TV will reach hundreds of thousands immediately but commercials can devalue your brand unless you employ an extremely expensive and culture savvy creative director. And they are the most expensive of all the mediums of communications.

When you scan the above matrix, a few questions might pop up. For example, “Why did TV news coverage get low cost value?” Well, while the coverage itself is free, the Public Relations Publicist you have to hire to get you in front of the news programming director is not free. Also, you might be wondering why Twitter has less credibility than Google and why Google doesn’t get 5 Spades of credibility. Well, Twitter is an intrinsically commercial site. But there’s one more method of reaching your market that’s even more effective than Google. It’s always been said that the best advertising is “word of mouth.” Now, word of mouth doesn’t go from mouth to mouth. It goes from niche blogger to niche blogger. These bloggers have personal relationships with their readers. They’ve earned loyalty over years of writing. Bloggers are more influential to each individual than a major network news anchor. Why? When’s the last time you were able to leave a comment on Connie Chung? It’s the interaction that engenders rapport. It’s their niche expertise that engenders credibility. If you get one of these bloggers to feature your story, you’ll instantly inherit their whole base of followers.
