You remember when you first joined a social media networking site like Linkedin, Facebook, and Twitter? The first time was a breeze. You imported your email address contacts and immediately had a chunk of followers, friends, and connections.

The trouble is growing this network afterwords. If you want a strategy for consistently growing your follower base in Twitter, See: http://sparkah.com/2010/06/10/how-to-get-twitter-tweeple-to-follow-back-fast/ and see the rest of this post.

While you can use the above strategy for long term network building, you’d be amazed how powerful the following single tip / trick is at raking in a huge influx of friends, followers, and connections in one fell swoop. Nice part is that you can do this periodically. I do it every 3 months.

How to Export Gmail Inbox Messages as CSV
You Can’t. There’s even an export gmail message filter lab feature. But it only exports the filters – NOT the messages that are filtered. So what you do instead is to download all your gmail to a POP/IMAP desktop client like Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 or Microsoft Office Outlook 2010. Nice part is that if you google: Microsoft Office Outlook Trial, you can get it for free for 60 days.

Once you’ve configured your Outlook, it’ll take a day or two to get a whole bunch of exportable email messages:

This post can also be alternately entitled, “How to Facebook and Twitter friend everyone who’s ever emailed you – ever.”

If you’re building up your “Rolodex,” this tip trick is priceless. Over the years, I’ve collected thousands, no, hundreds of thousands of emails. Funny thing is that while I may have nothing to say to 99.99% of these people who’ve emailed me in the past, I’d love to have them as twitter followers and facebook friends. The beauty of twitter and facebook is that they both allow you to import your gmail contacts. Yay!

But before we can do that, we have to extract the senders’ email addresses and store them as contacts first.

There are a couple ways to do this. First, the most rapid way is to simply export all your emails into a spreadsheet and re import only the FROM fields. This isn’t that hard to do. Just read about importing email addresses to gmail. And of course, you’ll need to know how to use Excel. It’s simple too.

- turn gmail’s pop/imap settings on

- download all your gmail to Microsoft Outlook

- export all messages as csv

- import only the email and name columns into Excell

- save as csv for import back into gmail as contacts

Or if you just want to add email addresses to your contacts selectively, one at a time, all you have to do is either

- reply

- forward

- or mark sender as “Not Spam.”

The third one is the least invasive.

That’s it.

Think about it. You try everything to increase your page relevance and ranking in Google. Google has to take a composite view of the entire web as far as it can see to accurately evaluate your webpage search result relevance.

Guess what falls squarely in the middle of “The Entire Web?” (Refer to Line Number One for Answer)

Did you ever notice that if you are reading an email about dinner, adwords will serve you an ad about a local restaurant? How do you think they do that? They read your email. No, not in the big brother kinna way, they have spider bots that look for nouns and match them to the keywords their advertisers specify via adwords.

This is the darkest secret because nobody uses it. It’s not the most powerful or effective on the ranking criteria but it IS the most non-utilized.

How do you take advantage of this? How do you use this new found knowledge to get high in Google?

1. Simple, make your emails forward worthy.
2. Include a signature with the link you are pushing and the relevant keywords to introduce the link.
3. Set up an auto reply that does just that.

How do you prove that Google DOES spider your email? Since nobody seems to agree with me. Again, simple… Create a new domain name. Don’t link to it from anywhere. Google the domain content to make sure Google never found it. Finally, send out one email with your Domain URL… Google your link in 72 hours. Call me in the morning. 310 598 1606. – Bob Wan-Qi Kim. Web Proliferation Strategies. And follow me on Twitter/Journik to hear the ongoing saga.
