How to Automatically Add Senders Email Addresses to Contacts in Gmail

This post can also be alternately entitled, “How to Facebook and Twitter friend everyone who’s ever emailed you – ever.”

If you’re building up your “Rolodex,” this tip trick is priceless. Over the years, I’ve collected thousands, no, hundreds of thousands of emails. Funny thing is that while I may have nothing to say to 99.99% of these people who’ve emailed me in the past, I’d love to have them as twitter followers and facebook friends. The beauty of twitter and facebook is that they both allow you to import your gmail contacts. Yay!

But before we can do that, we have to extract the senders’ email addresses and store them as contacts first.

There are a couple ways to do this. First, the most rapid way is to simply export all your emails into a spreadsheet and re import only the FROM fields. This isn’t that hard to do. Just read about importing email addresses to gmail. And of course, you’ll need to know how to use Excel. It’s simple too.

- turn gmail’s pop/imap settings on

- download all your gmail to Microsoft Outlook

- export all messages as csv

- import only the email and name columns into Excell

- save as csv for import back into gmail as contacts

Or if you just want to add email addresses to your contacts selectively, one at a time, all you have to do is either

- reply

- forward

- or mark sender as “Not Spam.”

The third one is the least invasive.

I’m a firm believer in Facebook. The reason is simple. I get about 10000% more clicks and reads and comments and participation from facebook than I do in Twitter. I even wrote a detailed post about Facebook vs Twitter.

Facebook is community. Twitter is ticker-tape.

Here’s why you should use Facebook for business:

1. Facebook generates 57 TIMES more traffic and comments than Twitter
(I know. I lied above.)

2. You can revive and recultivate relationships from a DECADE ago.
Just import all your old Yahoo and Hotmail addresses. Do it EVERY SIX MONTHS because there are still people in your contacts who will not get a Facebook until 2011.

Repeat Inviting Your Old Webmail Yahoo / Hotmail Contacts Every Six Months

3. The “one that got away” might just be free now!
Seriously though, the companies with the most business and clientelle are the ones who have the biggest rolodex. Stay in touch with every single contact from day one. The cost to acquire a relationship in monetary and emotional investment is astronomical. The cost to maintain the farm is minimal in comparison.

Think about it. You try everything to increase your page relevance and ranking in Google. Google has to take a composite view of the entire web as far as it can see to accurately evaluate your webpage search result relevance.

Did you ever notice that if you are reading an email about dinner, adwords will serve you an ad about a local restaurant? How do you think they do that? They read your email.
