If you do, I’ll auto email you the code so you can copy and paste (Yes. It’s the same one you can see plain as day).

I know.

For you super smart genius programmers, this is a no brainer. You can probably recite the Regex code for find and replace every word or cell (except) that does not contain xyz or my keyword phrase in Google Docs Sheets backwards.

Well, I couldn’t

I spent 3 months and probably a solid 90 hours looking for the answer and posting on places like Odesk, Quora, Reddit, Stackexchange and Stackoverflow. Finally, I figured it out with a programmer in Bangladesh. True story.

regexSpreadsheet

My usage application was to find job applicants who had a certain skill and then delete everybody else.

It’s easier in Google spreadsheets to make a copy of a sheet and delete everybody who does NOT match my search. For example, if I need to find people who can do Java programming in a list of people that can do C++, Javascript, Objective C, Java, Ruby, and HTML5, I need a regex search expression for that. Sure, I can set up a filter. But that doesn’t work for what I need to do next.

If you set up a filter and go copy all of Column C (that has everybody’s email address), everybody’s email gets copied — not just the people who you can see through the filter.

In any case, here’s the code you need. It’s in plane sight but if you want to help me recoup some of my lost youth and hair, you can support me by chipping in $1.99. I’ll send you an email with the regex code that you can just copy and paste.

Your time and hassle is worth more than $1.99, Right? =)
