In 1985, 25 years ago, over 2,000 people where poisoned with Aldicarb (produced by Bayer), an insecticide used on citrus and potatoes.

Today, the EPA says,

“Aldicarb no longer meets our rigorous food safety standards and may pose unacceptable dietary risks, especially to infants and young children,” the EPA said in announcing the agreement.

Scientific American explains, The EPA now says that kids under 5 can eat Aldicarb through food and even water that go beyond levels the they considers safe – by 800 percent. That was 800 percent.

Oddly, nothing changed between today and 1985 when aldicarb, with neurotoxic effects that inhibits transmission of messages to nerves, killed 6 people, caused two still-births, and caused vomiting, diarrhea, muscle twitches and abnormally slow heart rates in 2,000 more people. – Scientific American
